146 years ago, on a Friday night like tonight's, Justus Henry Rathbone and 12 Charter Members met at 7:30 PM in Temperance Hall, Washington D.C. and the Order Knights of Pythias was founded.
Today, February 19, 2010, Pythians throughout the Supreme Domain are asked to "look back to our past" and envision our humble beginnings and to see where we have come as an Order since.
Although our numbers are not as strong as they were, our determination to bring forth Friendship, Charity and Benevolence to a struggling society is even stronger and more prevalent than ever before.
With our Community Service and Volunteerism Program in effect, we continue to bring acts of Benevolence to our cities and deeds of Charity to those less fortunate than ourselves. Let our Friendship be extended to all that we meet in our daily lives.
Let all Pythians around the world, both near and far, home and away, celebrate today our Founder's vision of a Fraternal Brotherhood, based upon the precepts as exemplified by the story of Damon and Pythias.
"If Fraternal love held all men bound, how beautiful this world would be"
Fraternally, Dan Cowan Supreme Chancellor Knights of Pythias

OFFICERS ARE ELECTED!! - The 2010 Officers
were elected Tuesday, December 1st following a delicious ham & bean
supper prepared by Denny & Maridene Adams. CONGRATULATIONS to the
following Brethren who will lead Crescens Lodge into a new decade of
service to the New Castle community: SEE THE ACTIVITIES PAGE FOR THE CHRISTMAS PARADE STORY 20TH ANNUAL HOLIDAY FESTIVAL OFF AND RUNNING! Even cool temperatures couldn't hold back the prevailing enthusiasm on Oct. 17th & 18th as the 20th Annual Knights of Pythias Holiday Festival took center stage at the WG Smith complex in Memorial Park north of New Castle. On Saturday & Sunday the 2nd annual Fall Bazaar was staged with the bazaar doubling in size from 2008! Many of the vendors reported moderate sales over the two days. Crescens Lodge is still not happy with the foot traffic and is working to make 2010 better with a possible major food event on Saturday to draw more people. On Sunday the bazaar continued joined by the 3rd annual car show and the 20th annual chili cook-off. 56 cars and trucks entered the show, down some from last year. But 28 degrees to start the morning off undoubtedly kept some of the cars at home! The ones that were there were very classy and quite beautiful! Special Thanks goes to Brother Richard Neal's brother, Brother ANDY GOLDSBERRY, owner of AG DONE RIGHT, INC.; MIKE TAYLOR owner of RIDGE AUCTION COMPANY; ROGER EVANS of EVANS LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE and EVERYTHING ENGRAVING in Knightstown for being the sponsors of the car show! The chili cook-off had five contestants with Mr. Jack Williams becoming a three time winner. the menu was well received, especially the early sausage gravy & biscuits. We are already planning on expanding the breakfast end in 2010. All in all it was a great event. Thanks to the work crew! YOU ARE AWESOME!!
_____________________________________________________________________________ Crescens Lodge #33, Knights of Pythias of New Castle, proudly announces it's 20th Annual Knights of Pythias Holiday Festival for all of New Castle and Henry County. The Knights of Pythias, a fraternal organization, was founded in 1864 on the principles of Friendship, Charity & Benevolence and strives for universal peace for all mankind. Annually the Knights of Pythias conducts this Holiday Festival to usher in the Christmas season. The 2009 edition has seven spectacular events but will see a jump start to the start of the festival with the first event happening in mid October. The Knights of Pythias nationally donates thousands of dollars to various causes and charities. Crescens Lodge of New Castle has led the other Indiana Pythian lodges for many years as the largest contributor to charities, with over $11,000 donated back to local charities in 2008. It is hoped the community will get involved with many of these exciting events in this year's festival. The 20th Annual Holiday Chili Cookoff, the 2nd Annual Fall Bazaar and the 3rd Annual Knights of Pythias Car Show will get the 2009 edition of the K of P Holiday Festival started with a bang!. This is one of Henry County’s largest car shows of the season. The event will be staged at the W. G. Smith Auditorium complex in Memorial Park on Sunday, October 18, 2009 from 12 noon until 4 pm. With a record field of chili entrants the last two years, this year's competition promises to be awesome! Plus, local businesses are being invited to enter, so local cooks have a chance to take on that corporate chili cook! Contestants must prepare a crock pot of chili. Contestants are responsible for getting their chili to the basement of the W.G. Smith building by 10:00 a.m. the day of the cookoff. The public is invited to come to the chili cookoff from 11am to 4 pm. Three celebrity judges will be selected from the community to judge the contests. The cost to enter the cookoff $5.00 per person per batch. Contestants may enter more than one once. Prizes are $50 and a plaque to the winner, $25 for 2nd, $15 for 3rd place and $10 for 4th. There will also be sandwiches, nachos dessert and drink available at the cookoff contest . Entry deadline is October 14th. Entry forms are available from the festival outlet, the #1 fire station, the WG Smith office or by writing to P. O. Box 365, New Castle or by going on line at www.knightsofpythiasofnewcastle.com. The 2nd Annual Fall Bazaar will be conducted over a two day span. It begins on Saturday, October 17th with sales running from 11 am to 4 pm. On Sunday, October 18th the Bazaar will operate from 9 am until 4 pm. Interested vendors may contact Dennis Adams at 533-4287 for further information. The car show had nearly 100 cars in 2008. It runs from noon until 4pm on Sunday, October 18th and is free to view. A D.J. will be playing era music and a 50-50 will be conducted. Car show entry forms are available at all New Castle area auto parts stores, City Tire Store, at the festival outlet or on the Knights of Pythias website. Proceeds from this event will go to the New Castle Firefighters Children's Christmas Fund. The second event is the big event of the festival! The Knights of Pythias invites one and all to be a part of the 20th Annual Knights of Pythias All American Christmas Parade…"Christmas…A Salute To Volunteerism". The Grand Marshals will be well known Cancer Society Volunteers Rosemary & Levi Muncy. As the parade continues to grow, it is exciting to see the community get behind this event! It will be held on Saturday, November 21st with parade time set for 3:00 p.m. Already entered are 14 mini floats, the Knightstown Marching Panther Band and the Tipton High School Marching Blue Devil Band. Also scheduled to appear will be the Murat Shrine Clowns who will do a "meet and greet" with the children at Santa Headquarters after the parade! As part of the arrival of Santa into his headquarters at 1206 Broad Street, 'Tis The Season Gifts and Sherry's Florals will be conducting a Christmas open house from 9am to 6 pm on parade day with free cookies and warm cider to all who stop in and visit! Judging will take place at 2:00 p.m. for the parade. Again this year in the parade will be Children's Wagon Floats. They will be "red wagons" pulled by someone with the child rider. The wagon is to be made up like a float. There will be categories from ages of birth to 6 both male and female with 14 age categories. Awards will be $50 savings bonds courtesy of Citizens State Bank. Entry blanks are available only from 'Tis the Season Gifts, 1206 Broad Street or on the Pythian website. BROTHER JAMES L.
LUND VISITS CRESCENS LODGE - Brother James L.
Lund of Hercules Lodge #127 visited Crescens Lodge Tuesday evening,
September 22nd. He was escorted by Past Grand Chancellor
Christopher Breedlove. Brother Jim had asked permission from the
lodge to come and appear before the lodge to apologize for his actions
taken against the lodge on May 1, 2007 while serving in the capacity of
Grand Chancellor of Indiana. Denny, I would like to say that it was truly an honor and privilege to attend what I will consider the one of the most gratifying events of my Pythian life. As I sat in on your meeting on the 22nd , listening to the letter of apology that was being read by Jim Lund, my heart pounding with pride, tears of joy welling in my eyes and a lump in my throat, I looked around the castle hall and realized that I was not just hearing an apology but also seeing everyone being touched by what was happening. The pain of the past two plus years was being lifted as Brother Lund read, what I think were some of the most heart felt words ever put on paper. As Denny stated there was a great healing presence felt in the hall that evening. When the chancellor commander asked if there were any other comments, I fully intended to say something about what had just happened. At that time I could not find the words to express the pride & joy I felt for our order, for this I do apologize. There has been too much anger and dissention for too long. Brother Lund may be small in stature, but it took a big man to do what he did. I believe he was an example of true Pythianism. I commend Brother Lund for his actions and the brothers of Crescens Lodge for the gracious way they accepted his apology. To paraphrase Neal Armstrong - One small step for man, one giant leap for Indiana Pythians. Fraternally, Jim Smith, Jr. PGC (Orestes Lodge #471) Please feel free to share my thoughts with your lodge and thanks again for all you and your lodge do for this great order.
AT THE CONVENTION!!!! It was
truly an enjoyable time at the Imperial Palace Convention and the Nomad
Darbar!! There were many new Brothers and Sisters to meet and many
old friendships to renew! Some 23 of us enjoyed a visit to the
Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum and a trip around the famed speedway
on Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon the joint opening was held
followed by a Dokey Ceremonial with three Tyros receiving the work put
on by the team from Al Hilal Temple #33 assisted by a few other
Votaries. To cap the day was a lovely evening at the Imperial
Banquet. The Temple presented Imperial Prince with a large tiger
statue and the "Royal Macaroni", Most Gracious Maharani Angie with her
"official jewelry"...a macaroni necklace! She also received a red
hat granny doll for her collection. It was an enjoyable evening.
Monday had sessions for the Dokeys and Nomads. In the evening, 32
went to a very exciting Indianapolis Indians ballgame while another
group took a tour to the Moder's J.H. Rathbone Museum in Lafayette.
Tuesday saw more sessions and the elections. Tuesday evening 50 of us
went to Beef and Boards Dinner Theater to see "Smoke on the Mountain...A
Sanders Family Christmas". It was a rib splitting, enjoyable time
for all who attended. Wednesday, sessions finished followed by the
new officers banquet in the evening. There were of course the
usual midnight breakfasts which were enjoyed by the attendees. The
hardest part came on Thursday as we had to say good-bye to our friends!
Thanks to all who came and thanks to Indiana for supporting this
convention to make it a huge success! We were truly
proud of PIP Howard and PIR Angie for running a great convention!
Thanks for asking us to help! ________________________________________________________________________ MEMORIAL DAY ACTIVITIES ARE
HELD - Crescens Lodge #33 held it's
annual Memorial Day activities. The day started with breakfast.
The Breakfast Optimist Club served breakfast in the Arts Park
Pavilion and enjoyed this annual fund raiser! Crescens Lodge
conducted
it's annual service at our lodge lot in South Mound Cemetery at 8:00 am
with 7 Brothers in attendance.
Following the service, we lined up the "big knight" float for
the 10:00 am parade. We had Knights and Sisters to come
and ride on the float and make a large presence in the parade! It
was a lot of fun as usual! VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR HELD! - The
6th Annual Volunteer of the Year Dinner was held on Sunday evening,
Sunday, June 7th at 6:00 pm in the Crescens Castle. It was a
wonderful evening in which Crescens Lodge again recognized one of it's
own for volunteerism above and beyond the call of duty to the lodge, the
Order and the community as well as the extraordinary volunteerism of the
membership during the past year.. Past Chancellor JERRY WEILENMAN
was named the lodge's 6th Volunteer of the Year. He was presented
a plaque of appreciation at the start of the ceremony. He was
joined by 9 members of his family who came as a surprise to Brother
Jerry to help celebrate the evening with him. A delicious buffet
was prepared by the membership and served and enjoyed by all in
attendance. A special thank you to DDGC Richard Neal for the
preparation of the meat dishes for the evening. Linda & James
Cross, Ruthann & Ralph Willis, Maridene & Denny Adams and Beverly &

Pythians from District #4 were on hand to show their support to our
Grand Chancellor and to welcome three new Knights into the Order.
We say WELCOME to new Knights JASON MURPHY and CHRIS MADDY of Welcome
Lodge #37 and to SCOTT LAWHORN of Orestes Lodge #471! We are proud

On April 21st the annual Knife and Fork
dinner was held with 17 Brothers in attendance. CC Jameson McGrew
explained the "Knife and Fork" degree to us! Following dinner in
the dining room, we adjourned to the lodge room for our annual Rusty
Spike degree. There, we were refreshed with that "information"
that all Pythians should know anyhow! If you don't...NO BIG DEAL!
That is why we were there!! We hope you will come for a refresher course of Pythian
information and knowledge again next year and receive a VERY SPECIAL
gift for attending!! VOLUNTEER HOURS NEEDED!!
- If you are a VOLUNTEER ANYWHERE, we need your help! SC Dan Cowan

is to show that Pythians volunteer 2 million hours in 2 years! To
